I read a blog from a Rider Reader today (Shawn Kitchen) musing about a 10-day summer ride he is planning. Shawn is really focusing on making this trip about the journey itself (not simply getting from A to B) so he's outlined 6 "rules" that he will follow while on his trip:
No Interstate Highways, No Hotels, No Chain Restaurants, Count On The Kindness Of Strangers, Keep A Public Journal, Spend No More Than $30 Each Day.
(More on Shawn's ride at http://www.shawnkitchen.com/727/the-great-summer-ride-of-2011)
We've all done the A to B trip, I'm wondering if anyone else has any "rules" that have really transformed an OK trip into an awesome adventure?
Any summer riding adventures in the works?

There are several of us that have been riding together, for one big trip every year. Responsibility for ride planning rotates, and this year, the Ride Captain has made it clear the route will be a mystery. The only rule is we have to be someplace dry, Eastern Washington, Eastern Oregon, Idaho, anywhere that we can go to avoid the rain.

I like the allure of the "mystery ride"-- there's something really special about not knowing what to expect from day to day. How did you all come together? Through forums? Or are you part of a local group of some sort....?

The 3 original riders have been friends for many years. 2 of us were drinking coffee one day, complaining about riding in the crummy weather, and we decided to ride someplace dry. Bend Oregon was the original destination, in November. We got as far as Pendleton, Oregon, and were so cold that we stopped at the first decent motel. Later years included snow covered roads, good food, and not so good places to stay. And we moved the dates closer to the summer, this year going in July. We have added and dropped riders, but it is usually around 6.

Page 10 of "Where did you ride today?" tells about one of our rides. We actually have developed a theme, Dry Side Ride.

I have always had the "no highways" rule. I think ive only broken that rule once or twice, because i was following my wife to a destination and she was worried about me being alone.

Hi all. My name is Shawn Kitchen. I'm the owner of the website that Chelsea mentioned at the beginning. Thanks for the plug, Chelsea!
The more time passes as I get ready for this trip, the more I think about how this concept (setting specific agendas for each trip and chronicling the lead-in and updating live during the trip) could be an interesting way to travel. I just had another rider recently contact me to tell me about his upcoming 10,000-mile ride to visit 32 towns in the US, all named Manchester.
My blog for this trip isn't intended to make money in any way, so I hope I'm not violating forum rules to invite everyone to follow along. I just thought doing it this way would be an interesting departure from the norm.
Ride safely, everyone!

I don't have any rules on a trip like that. When I want to get somewhere, I slab it. When I am there, I stop as long as I want. Well, maybe I do have a rule. I ride solo. No one to be worried about whether or not that picture has to be taken, or that historical marker has to be read. I do have a few friends that are OK with that.

So glad I joined this forum today and read this post. It never crossed my mind to rotate the ride planning responsibility. Great idea! I like the idea of the mystery route as well and will be implementing this for my next ride with the guys! I live in WV and it has done nothing but rain for a month or more! Very lil time to ride and when it seems I have time it's raining! We actually broke records in April for the most amount of rain received here in our area! We are now expecting thunderstorms and heavy rains through the weekend. Not happy about this at all.
